Grasshopper Clock

This clock is absolutely amazing because it combines two of my favorite interests:  clocks and horror.  No, it’s not meant to be scary but come on, can you imagine having this thing hanging in your bedroom and waking up to face it one cold, windy and rainy night?!  No thanks.

The most clever part of the clock is the grasshopper escapement.  If you’re into clocks, you know the “grasshopper” is a type of escapement that’s not used very often.  Here’s an animation that shows how that escapement works in a more schematic format (note:  other escapements are also showcased on this site):

According to the Wikipedia article, the escapement was invented by John Harrison around 1722.  Escapements of that time were not efficient and, like some others of the period, aren’t seen often today except in curiosities like the Corpus Chronograph above.
